Where is Levi, Lapland?

Levi is a popular ski resort located in Finnish Lapland, specifically in the village of Sirkka within the Kittilä municipality. It’s situated about 170 kilometers (110 miles) north of the Arctic Circle and about 15 kilometers away from the Kittilä airport.

Snowsurfing, also known as powder surfing, is an alternative genre of snowboarding. Unlike traditional snowboards, surf snowboards are not meant to be ridden using bindings. The boards are made of wood and are very lightweight.

Snowsurfing is riding in deep snow, but the purpose is to get to the surface of the snow and bend in the same way as surfing. It is easy to start in the woods where there is a thick snowpack.  On a gentle hill, the speed is slow and easy to control.

You will find areas to do snowsurfing from the backcountry. To reach those places it’s good to use snowshoes and poles. The snowsurf board is attached to the backpack. Once you are up to hill You can attach snowshoes and poles to backpack and ride down with the snowsurf board.

Dressing appropriately for winter in Lapland is crucial to stay warm and comfortable. Here are some tips to help you prepare:

Base Layer: Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. Merino wool or high-quality synthetic materials are ideal.

Mid Layer: Add an insulation layer, such as a fleece jacket or a wool sweater, to trap heat.

Outer Layer: Wear a windproof and waterproof outer layer, like a down jacket or a well-insulated winter coat, to protect against the elements.

Headwear: Use a warm, windproof hat and consider a balaclava or face mask for extremely cold days.

Gloves and Mittens: Layer your gloves with a thinner liner underneath and a thick, insulated mitten or glove on top.

Footwear: Choose insulated, waterproof boots and wear thermal socks to keep your feet warm.

Accessories: Don’t forget a scarf or neck gaiter and consider sunglasses or snow goggles to protect your eyes from the bright snow.

Layering is key, as it allows you to adjust your clothing based on the activity and weather conditions.

Snowshoeing can be quite demanding, but it also depends on the terrain and your fitness level. Snowshoeing requires more effort than regular walking or hiking because you need to lift your feet higher to move through the snow. Although, our excursions are often carried out using ready-made paths.

Despite the physical demands, snowshoeing is relatively easy to learn. It’s suitable for all ages and fitness levels, making it a great activity for families and beginners. It’s a low-impact activity that can improve cardiovascular health and help with mental well-being by getting you outdoors and into nature.
